Top 10 Desk Drawer Organisation Tips

Desk Drawer Organisation Ideas

1. Remove everything and only put back the items you actually use

Start by taking everything out of your desk drawers so you can take a good look at everything they contain. Then be ruthless and get rid of anything you don't need or use, i.e. unnecessary clutter. Donate anything you no longer need so it can go to a better home.

2. Organise your drawers by function

It's always best to organise your desk drawers by function so take a few moments to categorise the items you need to keep in your drawers. Good categories include:

  • Stationery
  • Papers/files
  • Notebooks
  • Cables, chargers and other electronics
  • First aid/personal items

3. Prioritise the top drawer

The top drawer is for the items that you use most often so think carefully before you put anything in there. Items that are deserving of a place in the top drawer include frequently used stationery, notepads and chargers.

4. Organise your drawers in order of what you use most to least

Now that you've decided what to put in your drawers, think about the order that you'll arrange it in. Frequently used items should go nearest the front of the drawer for easy access.

5. Wrap up loose wires

Messy cables take up lots of unnecessary space so wrap them up with VELCRO® Brand ONE-WRAP® Ties to keep them neat and make sure they take up minimal space in your desk drawers.

6. Label your cables

How many times have you pulled a cable out of your desk drawer, not knowing what it is for? Avoid this by labeling each loose cable!

7. Remember empty space is good

Your desk drawers don't need to be full. For optimum efficiency and productivity, empty space is good! And it'll make it much easier for you to find what you need.

8. Use containers to control clutter in large drawers

Clutter can get out of control in large drawers so try using containers to divide the drawer into smaller compartments that can be organised by function. And to keep them in place, while still making them easily removable, stick them down with VELCRO® Brand Stick On Tape.

9. Go paperless

Does paper make up the majority of your desk drawer clutter? Then make a resolution to go paperless. You'll be amazed how much less clutter builds up in your drawers.

10. Stick to a "one in, one out" rule

Last but not least, try your best to keep your desk drawers neat and tidy by operating a "one in, one out" policy. Don't put anything new in your drawer unless you're replacing something you don't need.
